Madison, Wis. — It started with a small wagon shop on Williamson Street. And now one of our city’s most respected general contractors, Vogel Bros. Building Co., will celebrate its 85th anniversary of incorporation on December 11, while welcoming a fifth generation family member into the business.
Looking back, George Vogel, a German immigrant moved to Madison in 1875 to start his wagon and cooperage shop. As wagon use declined, George and his two sons, Henry and George Jr., began to build homes. Vogel Bros. Building Co. was incorporated on December 11, 1928 by Henry and George Jr. The family-owned business would go on to build some of Madison’s landmark homes and notable buildings, including the Barrymore Theatre, Madison General Hospital, Olbrich Botanical Gardens, and more recently, many schools, churches, corporate office, research, hospital, and pharmaceutical facilities. Now, 85 years later, the company counts both Madison and Lakeland, Florida as its operational bases and continues to build with the values, solutions and accountability that George Vogel brought to Madison so many years ago.
“Celebrating our 85th anniversary this year will be special,” said Peter Vogel, President and CEO of Vogel Bros. “Our team has worked hard the past few years. Despite the challenging economy, we’re seeing that dedication and commitment lead to success both here in Wisconsin and in Florida. Continuing to leverage our strong commitment to our values and heritage, we are paving the way for another 85 years of building successful facilities for our customers.”
Looking ahead, Vogel Bros. is excited about opportunities with its many long-time customers like University Research Park, SAFC Pharma (Sigma Aldrich), UW Hospital and Clinics, and new customers like the Willy Street Co-op and the Norwegian Heritage Center. Vogel Bros. retains and continues to expand our customer base through thoughtful planning and communication, high-value design, and a sustainable, quality-focused construction process.
“It’s very special for me to share this with all of our employees. I am really honored to celebrate this achievement with my father, David Vogel, our company’s Board Chairman, and my nephew, Darren Vogel, who has joined us as an estimator and project manager in our Florida division. Darren is now the fifth-generation of our family to help our company grow and succeed. That’s a rare situation in any business and I think that really speaks to the quality and commitment that our entire staff works to achieve every day.”
Vogel Bros. prides itself on being a good neighbor. The company gives back to the community, actively supporting the United Way, Race For The Cure, Goodman Community Center, and numerous area charities and community events. For the past 20 years, Vogel Bros. has also partnered with the Vogel Foundation to provide Dane County area children in need with school supplies. The grass-roots program, School Supplies for Kids, distributed over $45,000 worth of supplies to 138 Dane County public schools in August of 2013.
“Sometimes in this fast-paced and competitive construction industry,” says Pete Vogel, “I have to stop and remind myself to take the long view. My first, and most important, priority is to be a good steward of this company. We are blessed with an outstanding group of talented construction professionals. Together, our hard work will provide a bright future for Vogel Bros. Building Co. and our next 85 years.”
