features: Columbus Community Hospital's new fourth floor addition includes new medical surgery and ICU patient rooms, a more efficiently designed nurses station, and improved family waiting areas.
The project was particularly challenging with the existing ICU and medical surgery on the third floor fully occupied and operational during construction above. Existing mechanicals on the roof of the hospital had to stay operational while being enclosed in the new fourth floor. Plumbing and HVAC tie-ins to the third floor had to be performed room-by-room when occupancy levels allowed. In addition, pre-cast concrete was lifted to the roof by crane and would require constant coordination with the hospital staff to ensure areas were restricted to patients. As the new floor was essentially the existing roof, great attention to detail and phasing had to be monitored to ensure the facility remained waterproof. Through communication and rigid infection control measures, Vogel Bros. worked with the hospital to ensure patient's health and safety were not compromised, and to maintain access and functionality for staff throughout construction.
While the fourth floor was under construction, the first floor was remodeled which includes a registration, waiting, and collections area, a new chapel, expanded physical therapy, rehabilitation, and audiology area, and an expansion of the blood draw / laboratory area.
Throughout all of these projects, Columbus Community Hospital and its departments remained fully operational and occupied. This was also true during the replacement of the chiller, air handlers, elevators, medical vacuum, boiler plant, and emergency generator, as well as the addition of fire and domestic water pumps.
